Eagle County is an exquisite choice for vacationing year-round, but Winter is when the magic happens. Here are our favorite spots, from world-renowned mainstays to hidden gems.
With trails ranging from easy to double black diamond, Beaver Creek is filled with modern ski lifts, a wide variety of terrain, and fine dining. Whether you're skiing for the first time or you are an expert, this is a great mountain for an exhilarating and luxurious mountain experience.
Beaver Creek is one of the most well-known locations for skiing in the world. It has earned this reputation for the excellent conditions, luxurious amenities and friendly locals.
Beaver Creek is well known. But don't hold that against the location: it's truly one of the best places to ski in the world.
Eagle Ranch Golf Course
Just down the road (I-70), in Eagle, you will find the Eagle Ranch Golf Course. It is an award-winning course open seasonally depending on the weather (usually May through October). It was inaugurated with a special event hosted by Arnold Palmer playing a 9-hole exhibition round for the occasion.
During the winter months, the golf course becomes a spectacular course for Nordic skiing. Filled with trails and flanked by beautiful scenery, it's also the perfect location for outdoor enthusiasts interested in pursuing other snow related activities like skate skiing or fat biking.
You'll find yourself in a state of wonder when faced with the imposing views of 14,000 ft mountains from below at 6,600 feet above sea level. The natural beauty can be enjoyed year round as it changes with the seasons.
McKenzie Gulch is one of the best year-round hiking and horseback riding spots in Colorado. Winter sports enthusiasts should also rejoice: Nordic ski and snowshoe lovers can enjoy some moderate trails.
Be sure to bring plenty of water. The altitude and dry climate will increase the physical demands and your body will require more hydration. It isn't an incredibly difficult trail, but due to the exposure to the elements you may experience some harsh conditions along your journey.
This is also an incredible place to enjoy on a mountain bike or fat bike during the winter. Cycling enthusiasts come from all over the country to face the challenge of climbing McKenzie Gulch.
The beauty of McKenzie Gulch is also something to behold. There are over 1700 feet of vertical ascent: at the top, you can find spectacular mountain views surrounded by lovely evergreens and expansive stands of aspen trees.
Sylvan Lake State Park
This hidden gem is off the beaten path, and offers an unparalleled experience of being immersed in the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. It's good to find yourself in a place untouched by corporations and modern conveniences (without being too far away).

In the winter, it is the perfect location for activities ranging from winter camping, snowshoeing, and Nordic skiing. Snowmobiling is also a popular activity at Sylvan Lake State Park during the winter months.
